Jason Milburn: Dual Civilizations

In his most recent exhibition, Dual Civilizations, Jason Milburn continues to explore how people create religion, myths, and self-help techniques to navigate confusion and hardship in modern times. With characters referenced from the pages of a childhood Bible storybook, Milburn’s recent work investigates religion, therapy, and self-help culture, focusing on the intersection of reality and abstractness, as well as people’s relationship to objects.

“I like how the scratching out leaves a scar behind, showing what was there and also creating a sense of motion. I started using references that are familiar from my childhood because I wasn't feeling a connection to the figures in magazines and catalogs I had been using. The separation of the rendered figure from the more ethereal background is important because it feels like the figure is moving through, not just around, something.” – Jason Milburn
